History

River Community Church (EPC) originated as a vision in the hearts of the Rev. Russ Stevenson and several members of the First Presbyterian Church of Baton Rouge as an outreach to the East Ascension/South Baton Rouge communities.   The church planting process began in 1999 with the generous support of First Presbyterian Church.  In the summer of 2000, the Rev. Garnett Slatton was called as the organizing pastor, and the new church plant held its first service on Christmas Eve of that year.  On June 1, 2003, again through the generous support of First Pres Baton Rouge, River moved into her new building on Old Perkins Road in Prairieville and then became a particular congregation on October 26, 2003.  In November 2008, the Rev. Slatton was called to a church in Cleveland, Ohio; and Ian McFadden, who was on the staff at that time, served as the interim pastor until River called the Rev. Dr. Don M. Shipley, Jr. as the second pastor of River Community Church.  Rev. Shipley began as pastor on January 1, 2010.  In April 2011, River joined the Central South Presbytery of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church and was formally installed in July of that same year.  River Community is in the process of searching for a new senior pastor following Rev. Shipley’s departure in June of 2016.
